For this project I filmed myself plugging the hair out of my legs – one by one – while in the background Judith Butler was telling the story of a teenage boy who was killed for his afeminate way of walking. I put the hair in a bowl of water and drank it at the end of the performance. The disgust I felt while drinking the hairy water represented the disgust women learn to feel for their own bodies. By drinking my hair I tried to assign a new meaning to it and deal with the consequences of my discourse. The hair in my mouth joined with my words and the social construction of the feminine joined with the biological. The discourse turned into a practice.

 

 

Eu me filmei tirando os pêlos da minha perna com uma pinça, um por um, enquanto no fundo a voz de Judith Butler (1956) contava o caso de um jovem norte-americano que foi assassinado por causa do seu jeito afeminado de andar. Coloquei os pêlos em uma vasilha com água que eu bebi no final do vídeo. O nojo que senti ao beber essa água peluda era o nojo que mulheres aprendiam a ter do próprio corpo. Beber os meus pêlos foi uma tentativa de ressignificá-los e de lidar com as conseqüências do meu discurso. Os pelos se unindo na minha boca com as palavras e a construção social do feminino com o biológico. O discurso se torna prática.
